I started  with two pieces of corrugated cardboard cut from a delivery box.

Next I taped them together. 

To add extra strength to the join add an off cut of card.

Paint with white gesso.

Cut a piece of fabric slightly larger than the base.  Glue on using a thin layer of PVA glue.
