Mixed Media board - mini hearts

Hi, it's Brenda here with you today to share a mixed media project and start our new colour theme.

The colour palette attracted me and I had no idea what I was going to make when I started.
But this is what appeared.

These colours and the image reminded me that Spring is on it's way, they are fresh and bright without being too vivid and one thing I did know was that I needed to mix and blend some of the DecoArt acrylic paints to get the range and effects I wanted. If you look closely although my board is not an exact representation of the photo there are some similarities. The greens are all in the background and I have some darker areas that are similar in colour to those behind and under the flowers and I also have some blooms represented but that's where any similarities end.

I chose (in order from left to right) paynes grey, dark grey & viridian mixed, titan buff, napthol red & titan buff, napthol red acrylic paints and picked up a Tando media board to work on.

Process steps

Begin by sealing the media board with white gesso and squidge it on your craft mat to get the textures started. Dry.

Mix white modeling paste with paynes grey media fluid acrylic and apply through a stencil. Dry.

Mix dark grey and viridian and create some watery wash and drip areas. Dry.

Paint the little hearts with paynes grey, napthol red and titan buff, blending the colours together on the hearts as you paint them.

Brayer a light layer of titan buff, dry and spritz with water and splatter some paynes grey watery wash. Dry.

Use a very small text stamp to create some random writing; sand and ink the edges with brown distress ink.. Create your own word tile - I use computer generated sayings and mount them on a strip of greyboard. Add some pinky red flowers and the heart then you're finished.

I really fell in love with the finished piece. Each layer worked well and the pops of red really pull my eyes in.

Weathered Frames Tag - Jane

This week on the Tando Creative blog the theme is 'Frames'.

I was inspired to use one of the technique tags that Di brought to HOCHANDA yesterday as my base, but wanted to use a range of other greyboard pieces from my stash as the frames.  What I added to my tag are some of the mini frames and also washers and other pieces that have a frame like appearance...

I started by putting my pieces together, sticking the frames where I wanted them.  Then once these were set I added texture using Decoart Texture Sand paste to which I added art balls and micro beads to create different sizes of grains...

After this I also added some of the Decoart crackle paste and then once all of these were dried I painted over with white crackle paint as this added a much finer type of crackle. 

To create the colour I decided to use Brusho powders as I wanted all the crackle to be able to show.  I sprinkled a selection of yellow, gamboge and brown powders then spritzed with water.  These were then added again in different amounts, gradually building up the layers of colour until I was happy with the final effect...

Next I stamped out the butterflies and sentiment from a Finnabair set and coloured with some distress ink.  To create more definition to some of the edges I used an archival inkpad and sponge to make them a bit darker.  Finally the pieces were added to the tag, using some of the circles as frames for the butterflies...

Let's have fun with FRAMES - Brenda

Yes we're focusing on 'frames' this week so it will be interesting to see what the fabulous team come up with. I have used the mini printers tray with cover for my sample and I think you'll see why.  For my project the trays have become 'frames' for a little set of butterflies......

 .... which makes them look as though they are floating in the frames.

Process steps
Glue two of the frame pieces together and leave one single and paint all of the pieces with a coat of primitive chalky finish paint.

Cut a cellophane bag (still with two pieces together) to fit the inside of the double frame and glue it down.

 Open the cellophane up so that you have lifted the top piece and you're working in the middle of it. Glue on some butterflies. (mine are free images downloaded from the internet).

 Then lay the top piece of cellophane back down adhering it to the outside of the frame and then glue the single top frame over it. You have now encapsulated the butterflies inside the cellophane which makes them look as though they are floating in the frames and are totally protected.

Dip all the pieces in some watery quinacridone gold and add some tissue tape to the outside of the cover.

Stamp alphabet/numbers with black archival ink and scrape gesso randomly down the front and inside left covers.

Create a darker edge to 'frame' the piece by first dabing some watery burnt umber round the edges and spritz with water - heat dry. Then mix some burnt umber with paynes grey and slide the brush around the edges.

Dabble a little burnt umber randomly on the frame, leave to dry naturally - using a heat gun could melt the cellophane!. When dry scrape some white gesso over with a tine palette knife.

Glue the layered frames onto the back cover and add some words on the inside cover .....

..... - mine are computer generated.

Create a butterfly panel as the focus on the front cover, I simply used scraps of patterned papers and butterfly from an ephemera pack. I added another computer generated saying.

There we have the outside covers ......

..... and the inside ones.

Monochrome week with Lisa

Hi folks. Lisa here and it is my turn for 'Monochrome' week. 

I used the Tando Stationery box with two drawers for my project this week.

Here is what I created...

I then mixed a colour palette of greys using DecoArt black and white gesso and added some thick patterned paper on the lid and the drawer fronts.

To add some embellishments to the I used the Tando small clocks and Tando clock hands. I applied DecoArt crackle paint and DecoArt texture sand paste to the clocks and hands, and adhered them to the box.

Monochrome week- by Fiona Randall

 

 

Good morning,

it's Monochrome week here at Tando and I have decided to make a quick and simple tag as my inspiration for you.

 

 

I started by  applying DecoArt Chalky Finish in Primitive to a Tando Long Tag. I then stamped the edges with the Large decorative stamp from my Favourite Andy Skinner's Textures Stamp Set with black Versafine ink.

 

Next step was to take a piece of corrugated card and  cut to a tag shape to layer on the long tag base. I stripped back areas on the top and bottom to expose the ridged. This was then given coats of DecoArt Chalky finish in Relic, Primitive and Everlasting and blended to the desired effect. Stamping with Watering Can Archival Ink and Andy Skinners Illusionary Artists Word Up and Numbers  stamp set followed by my favourite Textures Stamp set again to the edges. Stenciling using Andy Skinners Children Stencil came next With DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylic in Carbon Black. A word chip was created by stamping a title using Andy Skinners word up and numbers set and applying to a strip of greyboard then attached to the tag. The finished Tag was then mounted onto the long tag base. A washer from Andy Skinners Industrial Elements kit was given a coat of DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylic and then glued to the tag before threading through a piece of black leather cord to finish.

Anything goes week- rusty tag by Monika

Hi!

I hope you are well.

It's anything goes week and I have decided to make a quick and easy tag as my inspiration for you :)

I'm using Andy Skinner Tagtastic 1 kit by Tando

Firstly I have painted the background using brayer and Decoart medium acrylic paints in Carbon Black, Metallic Silver, Paynes Grey and Quinacridone Gold

Once it was dry I have randomly stamped the background using black archival ink and embossed the ''Have Faith'' sign on the side.

Using puncher I have made two holes in the heart embellishment, I have also distressed the greyboard around the holes a little, then painted all over with Metallic Silver paint, stamped and added few washes to make it look rusty. Before attaching it to the base I have  wrapped it with rusty wire.
