Anything Goes Week- Fiona Randall

The theme on the blog this week is "ANYTHING GOES"

The idea for this project was based around the quote. Enter the Crazy Whimsical Birds.

I used one of the Tando Size 9 tags and adhered a piece of water colour paper cut to size.

This was then spritzed with Distress Ink Sprays in Seedless Preserves and Fossilized Amber.

Next up the Tando Stencil Grid Moroccan was given a good spritz with water then applied to the tag.

This was left to sit for a few seconds before placing a paper towel on top to soak up the excess water. 

Upon lifting the stencil this reveals a faux bleaching effect.

 Some water was then flicked onto the tag and then dried with a heat tool and the edges inked with seedless preserves distress ink.

 The whimsical bird pieces were then painted with DecoArt Chalky finish paints and doodling added with a Uniball Eye Black Pen.

 These were then assembled onto the tag base Along with the stamped Quote.

I then pulled out a Tando extra Large Media Board from my stash

. Stenciling was added with DecoArt Media Modelling Paste and when dry given a coat of DecoArt Chalky Finish in Carbon. 

I then highlighted the raised detail of the stencilling with a white Signo Uniball Gel Pen.

The Tag was then mounted onto the Large Media Board using off cuts of grey board to give depth and dimension to finish.

A few more doodles to the tag were added to complete the project.

A Vintage Tag

Hi there!

Celia here with a tag for our ‘vintage’ theme this week. I have been making a few vintagey things recently, which is a change from my usual bright colours.

I picked out a couple of tando tags (size 5 and size 9) and a media board. I embossed the small tag with an embossing folder, then primed the tags with Whisper chalk paint and the media board with Relic. Then I added some washes of Yellow Iron Oxide and Raw Umber to age them, followed by English iron oxide on the smaller tag.

Then I added some stamping to the large tag, using the Harebell stamps from Chocolate Baroque. Also some random texture stamps in brown Archival. Then I used some crackle paste round the edges of the small tag and painted it brown when dry, followed by black antiquing cream and some silver gilding paste.

I found an old picture of my granny, scanned it and reduced it in size & printed it onto photo paper. I gave it a coat of matte medium then some One Step Crackle. When this was dried I used grey Antiquing Cream to age the photo. For the media board, I wetted the edges and used a craft knife to peel open some of the layers. Then edged in Paynes Grey and finally treasure gold. 

Then I added a few bits and pieces of fabric, washi tape and buttons before glueing the tags together. My granny was an excellent dressmaker, so the buttons and fabric seams appropriate. I edged the large tag with brown ink, then added some vintage gold embossing powder.

Here’s the finished tag. The greyboard is great for throwing lots of different mediums at so you can really go to town when ageing a piece.

May Colour Theme - with Nikki

Morning everyone,

I made something for the colour theme week, I don't usually do these as I struggle sticking to 'rules'.. lol.  But these colours were so good together I couldn't resist.

I started with a media board that I had already put some modelling paste on, with the Clock stencil, and painted in magenta and turquoise, for a different project.  But something told me it would work well, so I stuck with it.

To disguise the turquoise (as it wasn't in the theme), I added pale grey/blue chalk paint and yellow iron oxide to areas just really roughly with the paintbrush.  A bit like the theme above!

Once I had finished messy painting, I added transfers to certain areas in keeping with the time theme, and stamped in a dark burgundy in random places.

I painted a Tando ATC coin in the grey, then stamped in yellow chalk paint with a distressed wallpaper stamp.  These pics are taken in the evening so the colours are more vibrant when seen on the finished piece.

This picture shows the background detail and layers on the media board background.

I took a plaster crown from my stash, and painted in a mulberry pink chalk paint, then finger painted over the relief bits with purple.  On top of this I highlighted in gold.  This was glued to the ATC to finish, and a final transfer number added for detail.

I absolutely love how busy and vibrant this is, and that depending on where you start with a piece of art you never know where it is going to end up.

Mixed Media board - mini hearts

Hi, it's Brenda here with you today to share a mixed media project and start our new colour theme.

The colour palette attracted me and I had no idea what I was going to make when I started.
But this is what appeared.

These colours and the image reminded me that Spring is on it's way, they are fresh and bright without being too vivid and one thing I did know was that I needed to mix and blend some of the DecoArt acrylic paints to get the range and effects I wanted. If you look closely although my board is not an exact representation of the photo there are some similarities. The greens are all in the background and I have some darker areas that are similar in colour to those behind and under the flowers and I also have some blooms represented but that's where any similarities end.

I chose (in order from left to right) paynes grey, dark grey & viridian mixed, titan buff, napthol red & titan buff, napthol red acrylic paints and picked up a Tando media board to work on.

Process steps

Begin by sealing the media board with white gesso and squidge it on your craft mat to get the textures started. Dry.

Mix white modeling paste with paynes grey media fluid acrylic and apply through a stencil. Dry.

Mix dark grey and viridian and create some watery wash and drip areas. Dry.

Paint the little hearts with paynes grey, napthol red and titan buff, blending the colours together on the hearts as you paint them.

Brayer a light layer of titan buff, dry and spritz with water and splatter some paynes grey watery wash. Dry.

Use a very small text stamp to create some random writing; sand and ink the edges with brown distress ink.. Create your own word tile - I use computer generated sayings and mount them on a strip of greyboard. Add some pinky red flowers and the heart then you're finished.

I really fell in love with the finished piece. Each layer worked well and the pops of red really pull my eyes in.

Halloween thrills with Tando Supplies - Brenda

Hi Everyone. 

HAPPY HALLOWEEN

As it's an Anything Goes week I thought I would pop in with a project and some photos of a class I taught recently at Country View Crafts using lots of Tando greyboard embellishments and their fabulous media boards.

This was my sample, a Halloween Triptych with three media boards held together with a back panel and lots of grungy techniques and images.

Several people had said they would love to do the project but were not fans of Halloween so I made a nature inspired autumnal board to use as inspiration fo those who wanted to mix it up a bit.

I took a stamp platform with me to show how to get clear stamped words on textured paper.

We had a fabulous group of ladies join us - some who had been to my workshops before and some new to CVC.

As always there were moments of fun and laughter .....

... and some of focussed concentration.

It was not long before people were designing their boards and choosing the fabulous chipboards from Tando to add to their projects.

Then we started to see different colour combinations ......

.... and the different compositions shine through.

We also saw how the DecoArt media paints and metallic lustres could combine to create some fabulous effects .....

... and how some splattering added another dimension.

You can see the mix of flowers and leaves, combined with cobwebs and spiders worked well for the Autumn boards ......

.... and how the skulls, cogs and bats could be added into the mix for the Halloween designs.

It's when all of this design and composition work is happening that I start to get excited to see how my original ideas and the techniques I used on my project get applied in different ways to create some really fabulous and unique work.

Each set of three boards were individual and personal to each participant as I encouraged them to follow their own muse and instincts putting their own personal stamp on their work.

Once the boards had come together and people were happy with the stories they were telling, we spent time on the finishing details ......

.... and everyone's projects together looked amazing.

 The raven and the pumpkin are not chipboards but were created using stamps and embossing powders - they added some great textures to the pieces.

Anything Goes

HI it's Brenda here as it's Anything Goes week I thought I would share the project I taught at Ministry of Mixology the other weekend.

We used media boards that Di cuts specially for me - they are 12 1/2 x 18 cms and a lovely size to work on.

I had 10 lovely ladies join me and we sat and used ordinary kitchen greaseproof paper for the background. 

Because it repels water when spritzed it pools and if you then add tiny amounts of the media fluid acrylics it looks brilliantly distressed.

With some stamping using Andy Skinner Tech Trauma stamps and one of his stencils with decoart black modeling paste plus some tissue tape the background started to come alive.

We finished by painting some fabulous stars that Di also cut especially for this project although I believe she will be adding some to the shop, so keep your eyes peeled.

Embossing folder texture

Hi it's Brenda here.
I thought I would create a textured media board for embossing folder week and I liked it so much I decided it would become my 'Make and Take' project at Ministry of Mixology last month. (I was well ahead of myself with projects as I had a holiday coming up and wanted to get loads of projects scheduled well before hand).

I adhered a few pieces of torn/cut left over embossed card randomly onto a media board using matte medium and left it to dry between wax paper under a heavy box.

Don't worry about gluing the pieces over the edges, you can remove these when it's perfectly dry.

Next I scraped over some texture sand paste and heat dried it.

Paint a coat of white gesso to give it some tooth for the next layers and then spend quite some time spritzing water, dipping media acrylic paints into it, letting it move around a little and drying it. I repeated this step lots and lots of times using raw umber, quinacridone gold, burnt sienna and carbon black.

I wanted to highlight the textures a little more so I took a palette knife and white gesso and lightly scraped it over keeping the blade flat to the surface.

The White gesso is very stark so mix a dirty watery wash of paynes grey and quin gold and paint over the whole surface, dry it and seal with a varnish - I used soft touch.

I took some elements I had already rusted and a word (I have no idea why I chose the word 'waiting' although there is something special we are waiting for later in the year - that's my unconscious mind taking over perhaps!) and I put it together to finish it off. I'm really happy with this.

The textures from the embossed card are random and give a completely distressed look to the background.
