3D Week - by Nikki Killinger

 Hi all,

It's my turn for this weeks 3D theme and I'm sharing a different take on Di's 'Butterfly Frame' workshop.

I painted the backboard in midnight chalk paint, and then applied crackle glaze with a sponge.  The top coat was chalkboard grey.  This left a fine crackle.  I highlighted it with red paint just by dry brushing, and stamped a text stamp over the top.  

The next layer is the arched frame, and was painted in midnight, and then dry brushed in silver.  

The top frame was also painted in midnight, and crackle glaze applied.  Over this I sponged warm white, which gives a distressed crackled look.

I whitewashed the text page, and adhered the painted plaster heart to the centre of the frame.  

Some transfers were added on the frame, and the diamonds were painted black and stamped in red text.

Christmas Printer Tray

For our Christmas Crafting theme, I have made a Christmas mini printer tray.
I started by looking through my stash for some mini Christmas embellishments. I picked a few from the Tando minis and made some with some old Christmas stamps I had.

I decorated the greyboard with embossing powder

and coloured in the stamped images with Promarkers. I varnished them with Triple Thick to make them a bit more substantial.

I primed the back of the printer tray with green chalk paint, then added Decoart green gold. Then I mono printed some other greens with textured wallpaper (a Seth Apter technique) and stamped some Christmas script with black Archival. I painted the star in gold and the tub in raw umber.

I stuck the three top parts together with mat medium, putting a heavy book on top for a while to get good adhesion. I primed it with gesso so that the finish would be nice and bright.

Then I painted it in a bronze paint. This looked a bit too pretty for my liking, so I rusted it instead, stippling on some media fluid acrylics in burnt umber, transparent iron oxide & quinacridone gold. Much better!

For the sparkly star, I filled it with triple thick and sprinkled glitter on top. Do this in two layers, as it shrinks a bit as it dries.
I stuck the tree together and stuck all the little decorations inside. Some of them I bumped up with sticky pads to give a bit of height.

Sea Heart

Hi There!

It’s Celia here today and November's colour theme is this gorgeous selection:

I selected my colours - PaperArtsy Midnight, Turquoise and Glacier Ice, and a mixture of an old paint dabber in Mushroom mixed with Yellow Iron Oxide. I chose the Flaming Heart, the Scribbles Heart Thins and a Mini's heart for my tag. I stuck them down and added a few patches of DecoArt Sand Paste before painting them first with PaperArtsy Glacier Ice.

I then stippled in the other colours with a hog hair brush, keeping the darker Midnight round the edge and working the lighter colours towards the centre. I added a bit of DecoArt Ferro for some sparkle and texture and dry brushed the thins with Glacier Ice to highlight.

For the Flaming Heart, I painted the base with Blue Lagoon and used a translucent embossing powder (Emerald Creek Fractured Ice). I used Cosmic Shimmer Lagoon Lilac Aurora on the small heart and Heat it up Aged Gold on the outer heart.

Then it was just a matter of gluing on the Flamed Heart and adding a ribbon coloured with spray inks.

Love and Hearts week- Vintage tag by Monika

Good Morning all!

It is the last day of the 'Love and Hearts' week, and I thought I would share this vintage, romantic tag with you.

I have started with running size 10 tag through embossing folder to get a nice background texture, Then I have used Heavy Gel Medium to glue a die cut, metal embellishments and pearls.

Using modelling paste and crackle stamp I have added some texture to my heart embellishment.

I have glued mini frame and metal padlock to it.

Whole tag was covered with gesso, once dry I have added washes of fluid acrylic paints. Next step was to dry brushing with white paint to slightly 'calm down' the bright colours. I have used the brown paint to age the edges. Last step was to add some splatters of paint.

Love and Hearts - Brenda

Welcome to a new week of projects at Tando where we are focussing on Love and Hearts - well I'm focussing more on the hearts lol. This one of the long tags to go with the long stencils that Di took to Hochanda last December.

I soaked the greyboard hearts with spritzes of water and pulled at the edges to make them shabby and distressed. I painted them and used clear crackle glaze to get the effects.

There was lots of the dip, drip and dry technique using media fluid acrylic washes with some asemic writing in white pen.

I also used my faux encaustic technique where I laid the embellishments in a layer of clear modeling paste to settle them into place. The modeling paste acts as a fantastic glue.

Mixed media, lots of painty layers and crackle effects certainly do indeed make me happy.

Anything goes week- rusty tag by Monika

Hi!

I hope you are well.

It's anything goes week and I have decided to make a quick and easy tag as my inspiration for you :)

I'm using Andy Skinner Tagtastic 1 kit by Tando

Firstly I have painted the background using brayer and Decoart medium acrylic paints in Carbon Black, Metallic Silver, Paynes Grey and Quinacridone Gold

Once it was dry I have randomly stamped the background using black archival ink and embossed the ''Have Faith'' sign on the side.

Using puncher I have made two holes in the heart embellishment, I have also distressed the greyboard around the holes a little, then painted all over with Metallic Silver paint, stamped and added few washes to make it look rusty. Before attaching it to the base I have  wrapped it with rusty wire.

Hi. it's Brenda here and I would like to say Happy New Year to you all from me.

My sample for this week's theme of 'Faux Metal' includes probably one of the most simplest ways you will find for creating a TARNISHED SILVER  look. I have been teaching this very quick technique recently for part of a workshop project and when the frame I used it on is layered with other elements it looks really quite cool.

My Tando make for the theme has the Tarnished Silver technique on the clock - it's so easy - but I've also used metallic lustres, other media paints and gesso to create this overall metallic look to the piece and added an easel die cut on the back

Firstly take the media board (cut from Tando greyboard) and give it a coat of black gesso to seal it and dry. Then paint a coat of media silver acrylic paint and dry before stamping with shapes and text (I used the Andy Skinner Steampunk set).

I wanted to keep the silver feel to this background so I mixed some gesso with the silver paint and when the ink was perfectly dry I rubbed it all over with my finger whilst spritzing it with water. I then dabbed a piece of kitchen roll into it to remove quite a lot of the paint before heat drying it. I also distressed the edges.
TOP TIP
I will nearly always distress/sand the edges of my pieces and use distress inks to frame the substrate  also to give it a lovely timeworn look.

Take the clock  - you can use chipboard or die-cuts for this technique - and paint it with black gesso, heat dry and then give it a rough coat of media silver acrylic paint. When that is dry randomly sand the edges so that you go back to the black or the original board and then blend in a dark brown distress ink. If you need to lighten some of the silver rub a very little of the silver paint or silver metallic lustre in random places to bring back some of the shine. That's it!!!!!!

 The inner circle of the clock was first painted with the silver paint, sanded and scratched and rubbed over with a little elegant emerald metallic lustre then covered with ground espresso distress ink. I flicked it with water and then dried it and repeated a second time.

The large cog was painted with media acrylic gold paint and sealed with ultra matte varnish. I lightly sanded some edges rubbed in vintage photo distress inks then also rubbed over some black shimmer metallic lustre and then dipped it in water and dragged a dry wetwipe over it ro remove some. I still
have a bit of a silvery effect on it. To finish I added some stamped scratches using Andy's Toxic set.

The heart was painted with a custom mix of paints which gave me a gorgeous bronze shade. This chart shows the stages it went through to achieve the final colour.

A coat of the custom colour. a mix of silver and black stencilled through the Tando cog stencil and then some splatters of silver and the silver/gesso mix finished it off.

The number was simply painted with black gesso, rubbed with a little silver spark metallic lustre and then the edges distressed with sand paper and vintage photo distress ink rubbed in.

The word was also painted with black gesso, stippled with the natural sponge and the silver/gesso mix and distressed.

Anything Goes Week - Nikki's Backwards Crackle Technique.

Hi everyone,

After a fab weekend at the Ministry of Mixology treat, I promised to share my 'Backwards Crackle' technique with you, and as it's anything goes week here at Tando it seemed a perfect time, so you can all see the process.

Step 1.
Peel back just ONE side of the plastic on your acrylic piece.  This protects the front from any paint spills, or scratching, but mostly stops you peeking until the end reveal!  (It's more fun that way).

Step 2.
Stamp your image in Carbon Black paint.  Put a small amount on your craft mat and spread thinly, then 'ink' up your stamp as you would with an inkpad, and stamp.

Step 3.
Colour your image all over but without going out of the lines.  I used Pyrrole red inside the heart.

Step 4.
Give another layer of colour inside the heart.  Because the Media Line paints are slightly transparent, you will still see your second colour coming through.  I put a layer of the new 'Extreme Sheen' metallic bronze here.

Step 5.
Water down a bit more of the bronze paint very slightly (or any colour you have chosen), and 'splatter' the whole of your piece.  I repeated this process 4 times, in different colours, drying between each colour so they don't turn to mud.

Step 6.
Paint a complete layer of Americana Crackle medium over the painting done so far.  This is a chalk crackle medium and only works with the chalk paints.  It also won't crackle what you have painted already, only what is put on top.  Wait until completely dry before the next step.

Step 7.
Take a chalk paint in a chosen colour, I used Timeless, and give a quick, even coat over the crackle.  Don't rub the paintbrush up and down, or it takes the crackle off, it needs to be a swift, even coat, not going back over places already done.  Wait while it crackles before your eyes.  Leave to dry.

Step 8.
For a final coat and to see through the crackle, choose a contrasting colour of paint.  For this layer it doesn't have to be a chalk paint, it can be any, but I used Treasure in the chalk paints.

Step 9.
When dry, peel back the front cover on your acrylic to reveal!

Step 10.
Working on the front of your piece now, take some embossing ink, I used Versafine Dazzle here, as you can see where you stamp it as it has a shimmer, and works really well on acrylic.  Emboss in a fine powder, I used a faded gold colour.

Add some wire and beads of your choice (mine are skulls of course).

 

Here are a couple more versions I was playing with :)  You can use any paints, as long as the chalk crackle has a chalk paint as it's next layer, the rest of the paints can be anything.
