Spring Binder

 

Morning All Fiona here with a project for this weeks theme on the blog 'SPRING'

I have decorated a little Tando A6 Binder in a spring theme and of course

I just had to add a Butterfly.

First up the binder was given a coat Of DecoArt Chalky Finish in Carbon on both the inside and out.

I then applied two coats of DecoArt Ultra Matte Varnish to seal the binder.

A distress Ink sprayed background  was created with some stamping and heat embossing to create a panel for the binder.

More heat embossing on the Tando Moroccan Grid. Also the flowers and the butterfly were heat embossed on Duralar Film for a Dreamy effect.

 An antique mirror effect was applied to a tando acrylic circle and circle frames cut from Tando Grey Board using a circle die were added. 

Finally a Tim Holtz chipboard quote added to finish.

I am embracing the bright colours and loving it.

Colour theme week with Brenda

It's a colour theme this week and here is the gorgeous palette. Winter is definitely heading our way.

I created a canvas board and used one of the Tando acrylic media boards, a Tando snowflake, DecoArt media acrylics and Stampendous aged silver embossing enamel.

The canvas board went through a couple of transformations but to start off I partially and randomly painted some broad brush strokes of white gesso over the surface and dried it.

I took out a palette of  cadmium red hue, quinacridone magenta, cobalt turquoise, raw umber, carbon black, titan buff and titanium white media fluid acrylics to mix and make similar colours as those in the colour swatch above.

Mixing the light blue colour first I made a water wash on a gelli plate and laid the canvas board over it to soak up some of the colour. I spritzed the gelli plate with water over the remaining blue wash)  and dipped the board again. I took some of the colour our by dabbing with a paper towel.

I repeated by mixing the pink colour ....

And then I knocked it back a bit and made it more ethereal by dipping in a watery wash of gesso.

 I found a really old wood mounted Penny Black stamp with this really pretty snowflake. Take off the protective paper from one side of the acrylic and stamp it using black stazon ink.

Remove the paper from the other side and start painting the arms of each snowflake in silver, gold and pearl metallic paints. I think I chose quite a difficult image so it didn't go too well ..... but I took a little cloth and dabbed on some surgical spirits and was able to rub some of the messy edges away without scratching the surface.

Next using a stipple brush dab over titanium white, titan buff and prussian blue hue on the back of the acrylic, I also used a little burnt umber round the edges which gave me a little frame effect. We will cover all the paint we have already put on the snowflakes.

When we turn the acrylic panel over the snowflakes in all their glory are revealed in the dark sky.

Once I knew what this looked like I could get back to finishing the canvas board for it to sit on.
Take the cadmium red hue, quinacridone magenta, carbon black and burnt umber media fluid acrylics again and mix shades to match the darkest red on the colour palette at the top of the post. Mix it with glazing medium and paint it round the edges of the canva board and rub back again. It worked well but was looking quite grungy so I totally changed the image. You can see with aged silver embossing enamel and some stippled blue, plus some blue and pink splatters it changed quite considerably. But that's what we do isn't it - change direction and follow our muse?

 and I was ready to assemble.

Craftathon 2018 - What I made..

Morning everyone,

This week it's a report on our Craftathon, held in Milton Keynes in aid of Breast Cancer Care.  This great idea was the brainchild of Di, who started crafters all around the country setting up and hosting Craftathons, with the event Di started organising being the one we helped to see through to the day.  A

Several of us ran make and takes, and we had a tombola, raffle with amazing prizes donated by nearly everyone we knew in the crafting world!  We had a cake stall, with vintage china and bunting, a 'Guess the weight' of the Embellishments Jar (it was heavy!), and everyone had goodie bags decorated by the lovely Cassie and donated contents by Susan. 

It was lovely to meet new people, as well as familiar friends and to be part of such a fab team of organisers.  I am proud to know every one of them.

I ran a make and take on my 'Backwards Crackle' on Acrylic, and had fun doing a couple of others, sitting with Celia and painting my t-shirt I'd been meaning to paint for a while, and making a fab bauble with Karen, I'm now hooked on bauble making....

I've attached a few pics, and so far in all we've raised over £10,000 between all the groups around the country, and it's not quite finished yet.  Before we had even hosted the day people were asking if it was going to be an 'annual event', and it went so well we may well do it again!

The T-shirt I stencilled and painted with So Soft Fabric Paints with Celia.  This took me around 8 hours, I started on Saturday and finished Sunday afternoon, it was so nice to get lost in painting for myself!

And the beautiful bauble I made with Karen,  there will be a lot more of these to come, I'm totally hooked!

Hope you can join us for the rest of the week and my colleagues makes, it was fantastic to be with so many of the team and to raise money for such a worthwhile cause while having the BEST time!  Never forgetting WHY we are there of course. xx

Anything Goes Week - Nikki's Backwards Crackle Technique.

Hi everyone,

After a fab weekend at the Ministry of Mixology treat, I promised to share my 'Backwards Crackle' technique with you, and as it's anything goes week here at Tando it seemed a perfect time, so you can all see the process.

Step 1.
Peel back just ONE side of the plastic on your acrylic piece.  This protects the front from any paint spills, or scratching, but mostly stops you peeking until the end reveal!  (It's more fun that way).

Step 2.
Stamp your image in Carbon Black paint.  Put a small amount on your craft mat and spread thinly, then 'ink' up your stamp as you would with an inkpad, and stamp.

Step 3.
Colour your image all over but without going out of the lines.  I used Pyrrole red inside the heart.

Step 4.
Give another layer of colour inside the heart.  Because the Media Line paints are slightly transparent, you will still see your second colour coming through.  I put a layer of the new 'Extreme Sheen' metallic bronze here.

Step 5.
Water down a bit more of the bronze paint very slightly (or any colour you have chosen), and 'splatter' the whole of your piece.  I repeated this process 4 times, in different colours, drying between each colour so they don't turn to mud.

Step 6.
Paint a complete layer of Americana Crackle medium over the painting done so far.  This is a chalk crackle medium and only works with the chalk paints.  It also won't crackle what you have painted already, only what is put on top.  Wait until completely dry before the next step.

Step 7.
Take a chalk paint in a chosen colour, I used Timeless, and give a quick, even coat over the crackle.  Don't rub the paintbrush up and down, or it takes the crackle off, it needs to be a swift, even coat, not going back over places already done.  Wait while it crackles before your eyes.  Leave to dry.

Step 8.
For a final coat and to see through the crackle, choose a contrasting colour of paint.  For this layer it doesn't have to be a chalk paint, it can be any, but I used Treasure in the chalk paints.

Step 9.
When dry, peel back the front cover on your acrylic to reveal!

Step 10.
Working on the front of your piece now, take some embossing ink, I used Versafine Dazzle here, as you can see where you stamp it as it has a shimmer, and works really well on acrylic.  Emboss in a fine powder, I used a faded gold colour.

Add some wire and beads of your choice (mine are skulls of course).

 

Here are a couple more versions I was playing with :)  You can use any paints, as long as the chalk crackle has a chalk paint as it's next layer, the rest of the paints can be anything.

King Kong Acrylic Mixed Media Board

Hi! Dana here today sharing a King Kong inspired Acrylic Mixed Media Board for the Anything Goes theme this week. I think acrylic is super fun to work with and I hope I can inspire you to give it a try. I started this piece by stamping a cityscape onto the back of an Acrylic Mixed Media Board using a portion of Nathalie Kalbach's Urban Scribble Cling Stamp with Jet Black Archival Ink. I backed the board with a piece of Basic Grey patterned paper. Next, I added a clear gorilla sticker to the front of the board. I added doodles with a Dylusions White Paint Pen. I finished this piece with a red "K" alphabet sticker and a strip of paper tape. I really love the effect of being able to work on both sides of this board!

Anything Goes week by Nikki

Morning everyone,

Nikki here today.  I wanted to share a make with you for my 'anything goes' theme this week, that I made for a make and take recently for Tando Creative and the Ministry of Mixology retreat.

These are the Tando 'Cubbeys', and are great fun to assemble in any way you wish.  Each one makes up a box, either with a solid back or a cut out, that you can add acrylic or acetate or leave empty, and put lights behind if you wish. You can stack them however you want too, or put certain sizes together if you prefer.  And you can add more at any time.

I painted and stamped mine before assembling them, using DecoArt media cobalt teal hue mixed with tinting base to get a pale aqua colour.  Each box was then stamped in a slightly darker shade of the blue, as background stamping.

I kept to two tones of the blue, and pyrrole red for the stamping, and changed the stamps around in each box.  The acrylic shapes are stamped in carbon black, and then painted from behind in layers, starting with the one you want to see from the front first.

The skull box was stamped and his teeth painted white, then I added Stampendous Frantage embossing powder in Aged Scarlet for his nose, keeping to the red theme.

I left the centre of the main acrylic piece clear, so you could just see the writing in the heart, and it looks lovely with lights behind of an evening.

Mother's Day - Stamped Acrylic Mixed Media Board

Hi friends! Dana here today sharing the stamped Acrylic Mixed Media Board I created for the Mother's Day theme this week. I absolutely love experimenting with different mediums on acrylic. I used the new ColorBox ColoriQue by Lisa Marie Jimenez line from Clearsnap to color the stamped images on this board.

Step 1: Stamp a flower pattern onto the acrylic board using black archival dye ink. Turn the stamp while working to create a more interesting design. Use a heat tool to help dry the ink. Note: I was able to use an unmounted rubber stamp for this project because of the clear acrylic base. I positioned the inked stamp on my work surface and then pressed the acrylic board onto the stamp. I avoided overlapping the stamped images easily because I could see through the board.

Step 2: Apply several colors of ColoriQue to a craft mat. Use a paintbrush to apply ColoriQue in and around the stamped design. Note: Apply ColoriQue to the BACK of the acrylic board. You don't want to paint over the beautiful stamped design you added in the previous step.

Here is what the back of my board looked like after painting, before embellishing. You can mix different shades of ColoriQue together on the craft mat or directly on the board to create a more life-like effect.

Step 3 (optional): Dye seam binding ribbon with dye ink spray. Insert the ribbon into a plastic bag, spray mist into the bag and scrunch to spread the color. Dry the ribbon with a heat tool. Note: If you have a nice bright piece of ribbon in an accent color that coordinates with your chosen paint palette, skip this step.

Step 4: Stamp a sentiment onto a tag. Add the ribbon and tag to the board.

Stampendous Week - Stamped Acrylic Mixed Media Board

Hi friends! Dana here sharing the Acrylic Mixed Media Board I altered for the Stampendous theme this week. Tando has recently expanded their product line to include MDF and acrylic pieces, so be sure to stop by the Store and check out the offerings if you haven't done so already.

I used the Stampendous Nestled Bird Wood Mount Stamp (R158) with Colorbox Beyond Black Surfacez Ink, which is a fast-drying pigment ink designed to work on slick surfaces. I heat set the stamped image and then added color with alcohol ink.

After the image was colored I embellished the edge of the board with Stampendous Spoonful of Gold Dust. I wasn't able to heat the Gold Dust from underneath to coat the edges of this board, so I used some Top Boss Watermark Ink to help hold the product in place while I applied heat. I finished this piece with a sticker sentiment and some twine.
