Something you can hang - by Zoë Sanderson

Hello, I had a little play earlier this week and took a few snaps along the way to share with you.

This is a side view of the finished piece, a resin piece on one of the Tando Plaques resting on a Tando Tag Stand.

Starting point

With something like this resin cast you need a strong background to show it off out then with the Black Gesso.  I've had this pot for years and expect it to go on for a long while.  It also goes on well and with a  well loaded brush one coat will be sufficient.

As the main piece of this is a phoenix a few flames in the background will look good.   An old stencil which had structure paste pushed through at the sides that the cast piece would not cover.   Then it was a wait until the paste had dried.  When it was ready the stencil went back on and magic mica rubbed over, in colours to match the main piece.

Then it was time to glue everything together I used silicon glue for a strong hold.  Then gave all the edges a covering of silver wax.  The greybeard just takes all these different mediums in its stride.

For the stand I just used some gold finishing paste applied all over care being taken the the slots do not become clogged.  And there it is something to stand on a shelf or with a ribbon or chain hang on a wall.

Playing with Plaques - Zoë Sanderson

Today I'm going to share with you a project that was going in one direction but needed with one piece going off on a tangent.

So what happened along the way.  The original plan was to use the Plaques and the Whimsical Houses.

Having released a couple of the houses from their board it was time to start.  Usually with a project like this the first step is to gesso everything however I knew texture would be a feature making time to get the pastes and stencils out.

OK I wanted to have a play as well.  This was an opportunity for me to try the DecoArt modelling paste out for the first time.   The stencil I used is from this set of 4 and I've had lots of fun with this one especially.

The fun thing about the paste is that it dries clear!   Once the paste had dried then gesso was brushed all over.  Now it is time to start to colour them.

Something else that is a lot of fun is applying wax pastes.   I like to use a cotton makeup removing pad, they pick up the paste easily and make it easy to apply.  The best thing is to use circular movements working over the surface and building the colour up.  Repeated working also brings the shine and luster up.

For the other Plaque I used watercolour paints and then decoupaged some printed tissue over the top.

The Houses were also given a gesso base, watercolored, and then glued together.   One of the houses was also given some printed tissue additions.  Although it looks OK in this picture in real life it's not so good.  I play around with layouts for a while before finally deciding how the Whimsical House plaque would look.

Well that was one plaque but what about the other?   That third house was not working especially not on the metallic finish of the second base.  It just happened that all this took place during a 4 day crafting binge when I tried all sorts of different things.

Included in my some resin casts and clay casts using a great American mould.  The resin piece was coloured with DecoArt acrylic paints, the clay pieces didn't need any paint adding.

As always I hope you had fun reading this and are encouraged to go out and get inky/messy yourself while having fun!

Resist Week- Fiona Randall

Morning all Fiona here with this weeks theme- Resist.

There are many ways and techniques to achieve a resist effect in your project

and I have used two of the many that are out there to discover.

I have used one of my Layered Tags produced by Tando for my project this week.
The main cut out base tag uses the wax paper resist technique.  Wax paper was embossed in an embossing folder placed on top of the tag which was given a coat of DecoArt Tinting base. The tag was then sandwiched between to pieces of copier paper to create a sandwich. Then ironed with a dry iron gently moving over the tag. The heat of the iron melts the embossed waxed design and transfers it onto the tag base. The tag was then inked with Aged Mahogany and Rusty Hinge distress inks and gently dried with a heat tool. Once dry the tag was gently wiped back with a damp paper towel to reveal the resist pattern of the wax transfer. The second resist technique was applied to the top keyhole plate using the clear embossing method. Stamping was applied to the key plate using Ground Espresso Archival ink and a text stamp. Whilst the ink is still wet sprinkle on clear embossing powder and heat set. Vintage photo distress ink was then applied to the bare grey board. The embossed text resist the inking. The base of the triple layered tag was then coloured to tie in and all pieces assembled as shown. Elements were added to finish and the tag then layered onto a piece of Tando Grey Board cut to size. This had been given a coat of DecoArt Chalky Finish in Carbon and then stamped with black archival ink using a text stamp.
Here's a close up of the resist techniques used.

A fun project exploring the many ways to achieve a resist effect.
Thanks for stopping by today
Stay Safe Fiona xx
