Gothic Window Frame Project- Fiona Randall

 

Morning lovely people. For my latest Tando DT Project I have created a wall plaque using one of my new Gothic Frame Designs recently launched and now available to purchase in the Tando Shop.

I have used the large Gothic Frame Style 1 for this project. 

To start I used my Fancy deep frame which I assembled and glued omitting using the top panels. I then applied a layer of modelling paste all over the back panel with a pallet knife to create texture and before it dried I scored lines to create a large brick patten.

 I was going for a Castle/Church look here.

 Then created another frame to go around the Gothic Arch frame using foam board. 

I rounded the edges using a curved woodworking tool and then sanded to smooth. 

I also made the corbals that sit under the frame from foambord too and gave them the same rounded corner treatment as the foam frame. 

I then gave the foam frame a coat of texture sand paste and also the back panel in places. Once dry the foam frame and back panel were given a coat of DecoArt Americana Acrylic in Dove Grey and dried with a heat tool. 

Washes of DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylic in Paynes Grey was the added and dried with a heat tool. Washes of DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylic in Sap Green was then applied in random places to give an aged stone effect.

I then applied DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylic in Dark Grey Value 3 to the lattice layer of the large gothic frame.

 I then mixed some of the dove grey paint into the dark grey paint and made a lighter shade and to this mix I added some texture sand paste and applied with a stipple brush to the ornate layer of the Gothic frame and dried with a heat tool.

I then dry brushed some dove grey over the frame to pick up and highlight the texture. The gothic frame layers were then glued together and inserted into the foam frame frame which creates that recessed look.

 I then printed a stain glass window effect onto an inkjet transparency sheet and cut to size and applied to the back of the gothic Arch Frame.

 I added tiny lights to the deep fancy frame base and then glued the Gothic Arch in place as shown.

 The corbals were then glued in place under the window as shown. To finish I added some Ivy Rub on Transfers in opposite corners for interest.

Hex Tech Tuesday - Helter Skelter by Kim

 Do you remember that before Christmas (1st November) I showed you how to make a useful tower using Tando hexagons?

I’ve already made a lighthouse and a haunted windmill so this time I went for a derelict heater- skelter. 

Using the basic hexagon tower I decided that rickety old fairground rides would need to be built with boards, so my collection of coffee stirrers got put to good use.

Rather than cut the ends neatly I measured and snapped the stirrers. To make the planks look even older and more decayed. I used a sharp craft knife (being very careful, of course) and took a few chunks out of the edges. To vary the design I made some joints and some missing and loose planks. 

This was a long job and took maybe 150 planks from around 50 stirrers. I used PVA to stick them to the tower.

The top of the helter-skelter is make from Tando Creative birdcage shapes I had lurking. I cut out the centre cage bars and trimmed the top and bottom to be straight. I stuck five of them together using small hexagons as a former. The roof is made of thin card, curved to make a cone shape.

The broken slide sections are cut from Tando greyboard offcuts, with coffee stirrer sides.

I used DecoArt Modelling paste to add texture to the rotting roof. When dry it was painted black, before adding the other colours.

I painted the red diamond shapes on the tower with a diluted Santa Red, to give the patchy, peely look. The sides of the slide are in Forest Green, with Burnt Umber for the slides. The sides were aged with diluted washes of Burnt Umber and Lamp Black.

To add the mouldy, stained look I used DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics; Quinacridone Red, Paynes Grey, Transparent Yellow Iron Oxide, and Green Gold.

All finished with a distressed ‘Hell-ter Skelter’ sign.

Tando Art BlockButterfly- Fiona Randall

 

Hello All Fiona here with a project using one of The Art Blocks recently launched.

I started by gluing the block together and then gave it a coat of DecoArt Chalky Finish in Carbon. Once dry I then applied a coat of DecoArt Ultra Matte varnish to seal and protect.

I then cut a piece of scrap booking paper from my stash to fit the front and the sides. I Inked the edges of the paper with black archival ink and then attached to the Art Block with DecoArt Decoupage glue.

I then applied DecoArt Chalky finish in Treasure to a Tando Heart from the Grab Bag of Hearts. This was then stamped with a script stamp in black Archival Ink and then Heat embossed with clear embossing powder. The edges were then swiped with DecoArt Metallic Lustre in Gold. 

A small Tando Layered Butterfly was assembled and blue glitter added to the recesses and the top layer was given a coat of DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylic in Raw umber and swiped with the gold metallic lustre. The heart and Butterfly were then layered up onto the Art Block as shown using off cuts of grey board to give depth and dimension. The edges of the box were then swiped with the metallic lustre wax and a sentiment added to finish.

These Art Blocks which come in various sizes and depth are a great way to showcase all manner of designs and techniques. 

There will be quite a few blog posts over the coming weeks from the DT to showcase what they have done with their Art Blocks.

Playing with Plaques - Zoë Sanderson

Today I'm going to share with you a project that was going in one direction but needed with one piece going off on a tangent.

So what happened along the way.  The original plan was to use the Plaques and the Whimsical Houses.

Having released a couple of the houses from their board it was time to start.  Usually with a project like this the first step is to gesso everything however I knew texture would be a feature making time to get the pastes and stencils out.

OK I wanted to have a play as well.  This was an opportunity for me to try the DecoArt modelling paste out for the first time.   The stencil I used is from this set of 4 and I've had lots of fun with this one especially.

The fun thing about the paste is that it dries clear!   Once the paste had dried then gesso was brushed all over.  Now it is time to start to colour them.

Something else that is a lot of fun is applying wax pastes.   I like to use a cotton makeup removing pad, they pick up the paste easily and make it easy to apply.  The best thing is to use circular movements working over the surface and building the colour up.  Repeated working also brings the shine and luster up.

For the other Plaque I used watercolour paints and then decoupaged some printed tissue over the top.

The Houses were also given a gesso base, watercolored, and then glued together.   One of the houses was also given some printed tissue additions.  Although it looks OK in this picture in real life it's not so good.  I play around with layouts for a while before finally deciding how the Whimsical House plaque would look.

Well that was one plaque but what about the other?   That third house was not working especially not on the metallic finish of the second base.  It just happened that all this took place during a 4 day crafting binge when I tried all sorts of different things.

Included in my some resin casts and clay casts using a great American mould.  The resin piece was coloured with DecoArt acrylic paints, the clay pieces didn't need any paint adding.

Rusty Butterfly Tag Plaque

 

Morning all Fiona Here with my first post of the New Year.

I am in my comfort zone for this project with a rusty grungy Tag topped with a metallic effect embossed Butterfly and a cog thrown in for good measure

Layers of DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylic paint were dripped and drabbed onto a Tando size 7 Tag and heat dried between layers until I got the look I was after.I then added some stamping using an Andy Skinner Vintage Background stamp for some extra interest using black Archival Ink. The Tag edges were then inked using black Archival Ink to draw everything into the background.

Texture sand paste was then applied to a cog from The Industrial Elements set. Once dry this was given a coat of DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylic in paynes Grey then swiped with Burnished Brass metallic Lustre once dry. A small washer from the industrial elements kit was given a rusty treatment along with some resist stamping. The same rusty treatment was applied to the bookplate and screw heads and black stamping added. I then embossed and die cut the butterfly using a Tim Holtz 3d Impresslit embossing folder from black 300gsm cardstock. This was then swiped with the Burnished Brass Metallic Lustre to highlight the raised areas. All elements were then layered up onto the tag using offcuts of grey board to give depth and dimension. The tag was then layered onto a piece of Tando Grey Board cut to size to which was painted using DecoArt Chalky Finish in Carbon and two coats of DecoArt Ultra Matte Varnish to seal. Thedges were then swiped with the same Metallic Lustre. A small piece of cardstock was cut to size to fit the bookplate and stamped before attaching and gluing to the base of the tag as shown. Two mini screw heads were then applied to finish.

The World in a Matchbox - by Kim

Ever thought it would be nice to carry your whole world in a matchbox? Well, I’ve sort of done it by putting all the Oriental astrological elements in one box; fire, earth, metal, water, wood.

I’ve used, from Tando Creative, their Matchbox, Medium with inserts. It arrives flat packed but assembly is easy and straightforward. I used ordinary PVA to stick it together.

I decided that I would use four inserts and the cover would be the fifth element, and that would be a dramatic ‘metal’ finish. 

For the individual 'metal' plates I used pieces from Tando Offcuts. I chopped the edges randomly to to make them less than perfect, and more interesting, then glued them to the surface of the cover. (Be careful when using sharp blades!)

Base coat the entire cover - except the plates - with Lamp Black, including going inside by a brush width incase it is visible on the finished piece.

I painted two coats of DecoArt Venetian Gold on the plates so that it was well covered. Next I aged the edges by blending Quinacridone Gold Media Fluid Acrylic. Finally, I blended Paynes Grey Media Fluid Acrylic around the outside, to give more depth to the ageing.

Now to the inserts. I printed four pictures*, one for each of the remaining elements, and glued them on. I cut them slightly larger than the insert so that I could use coarse sandpaper to ‘blend’ the edges to fit.

To embellish the pictures I printed the Chinese characters and words. For the back of each card I used the element’s associated colour; earth - yellow, wood - green, fire - red, water - black,(metal is white) and a slip-slap graduated blend of DecoArt colours. A little gold wax rub-on round the edges finished it off.

Back to the cover. I added characters, words. and title to the outer. The inner tray was painted black outside and white inside. I stamped ‘I paint what I like’, added characters, and finished with ‘long life’.

Morning all it's Anything Goes Week here on the Tando Blog.

I love the Tando Matchboxes both the deep and the shallow versions.

They lend themselves to so many decorating options and I just can't stop paying around with them.

I have used the medium shallow matchbox for my project this week.

I started by applying Modelling Paste through my Star Shower Stencil to the top and sides of the matchbox. I then took one of the Matchbox inserts and  and applied the  Tando Harlequin extra thins to opposite corners and The Tando Flourishes to the opposing opposite corners.This was then glued to the Matchbox top. Next step was to stamp and emboss onto a piece of black card using one of my new stamps from the Sacred Set. This was then cut to size and attached to the the resin frame. The frame was then attached to the top of the matchbox. The whole matchbox was then given a coat of DecoArt Chalky Finish in Carbon making sure I got into all the nooks and Crannies. The whole piece was then dry brushed with DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics. I used a mix of Dioxazine purple mixed with Silver Metallic to create a Metallic Purple shade. DecoArt Metallic Lustre in Goldrush was then applied to highlight all the high points. A fun project to create and this one is to store my bracelets in.

Butterfly Week- Fiona Randall

 

Morning all,

 The theme on the blog this week is 'BUTTERFLIES'

You know that I have a passion for this subject matter so this was a no brainer for me.

I used one of the Tando Size 8 Tags and a Piece of Tando Grey Board cut to size to mount the Tag onto to create a panel. A piece of watercolour cardstock was cut to fit the tag and glued into place.

The tag was stamped with the leaves and embossed in gold embossing powder. This was then Water coloured with Lindy's Magicals and Distress Spray Stains and finally a few splatters added with gold paint. 

The flowers were stamped and gold embossed onto vellum and fussy cut. The Butterfly was stamped and given the same water colour treatment as the leaves on the tag.

The flowers and the butterfly were then added to the tag with off cuts of Grey Board to give depth and dimension. Finally a simple sentiment was added as shown.

The panel was given a coat of DecoArt Chalky Finish and the edged by swiping gold wax.

The Tag was then mounted onto the panel with off cuts of grey board to give depth to finish.

I love how this has turned out and the soft dreamy effect I was going for I think I achieved.

 Morning All.

 The theme this week on the Tando Blog is LOVE.

Using my go to supply of Tando Grey Board I created a little layered plaque with a Tando Heart as the focal Element. Some background stamping with a Chocolate Baroque Stamp and Transfer Foiling applied ( something new I am exploring). finished off with some string and a metal key wrapped around the heart, before layering onto some offset straws. 

Not my Normal I know but I am continually challenging myself to try new things.
