A Little Birdie House- Fiona Randall

 Happy Coronation Monday everyone.

 I am stopping by to bring you a little quick and easy project using a little wooden Bird House

This is the completed project.

The Tiny Birdhouse in it's undecorated state.

I started by giving the birdhouse a coat of DecoArt Media Tinting Base and dried with a heat tool.

I then gave the roof, base and the peg for the bird to sit on a coat of DecoArt Chalky Finish in Honour.

This is a wonderful dark Navy Blue Colour. 

I then gave the roof a coat of DecoArt Crackle for chalky finish paints. 

I then dried with a heat tool keeping it moving until the crackle had dried clear.

 I then applied with a sponge DecoArt Chalky finish in Everlasting. By dabbing the paint on with a sponge you will not over work and remove the crackle medium as you would with a brush.

 I find this method more forgiving and gives a much more even finish with the added bonus of no brushstrokes. I then dried with a heat tool until the cracks appeared.

I then applied washi tape from my stash which just happened to be the right width all around the walls of the birdhouse as shown. 

also washi tape was applied to the edge of the base as shown. I had a little pedestal to display the bird house on  which was already painted painted white.

To finish I fussy cut a little bird from my stash of Ephemera and attached to the birdhouse using 3d foam tape.

 I also stamped a little chocolate Baroque butterfly and glued at a jaunty angle to the roof.

A Fun, Quick and easy little project that has a vintage feel to it.

A Christmas tag by Celia

 Hi there Christmas Crafters!

I’m just starting to get into the Christmas mood now - I’m a slow starter! To kick off Christmas week, I’ve  used one of Fiona’s gorgeous layered tags and turned it into a Christmas bauble. I was channelling the vintage vibe for the colour scheme.

I started off by priming the top tag with white chalk paint so that my colours would be nice and vibrant. Then I painted some patches of bright coloured chalk paints and applied a layer of crackling medium once dry. 

When this was dry I started on the centre. I pulled out lots of bright coloured embossing powders to make my bauble. I painted a section with the Wow embossing brush, being careful not to apply to much of the medium, then added the embossing powder. I did this with each colour. 

Before doing the border, I brushed on a coat of pale green chalk paint, leaving a small border around the cut out section. This crackled very quickly, and produced the colourful crackle effect I was hoping for.

 For the border I carefully drew round the edge with an embossing pen and applied a grungy copper embossing powder (Seth Apter’s Crusty Copper from the Metalz set by Wow) and knocked off any bits that were in the wrong place with a dry brush, before melting. Then I created the top part of the bauble in the same way. I painted the backing tag in gold before adhering it to the top tag. To finish, I went round the edges with some Burnt Umber acrylic.

Morning Fiona here with my contribution for this weeks theme- ANYTHING GOES-

 

I have had this kit in my stash for awhile now and thought it was about time to finally complete it to hang in my Kitchen. As many who know me all know, I have a bit of a thing for Butterflies and use them in my projects at every opportunity LOL..

So these new Butterflies that Di showcased on her Hochanda show yesterday have also made an appearance here too.

Crackle Week - Nikki K

Morning all,

It's my turn for the Crackle week post, hope you've enjoyed everyone's inspiration this week.

I took one of Di's fab Ring Binders, and painted it first in Everlasting Chalk Paint.  I then added a layer of Americana Chalk Crackle, which only works with the chalk paints.  But instead of doing a different colour for the top layer..  I did a 'same colour' crackle, so Everlasting over the top again.  This still gives a crackle, but more of a subtle texture than contrast.

When the crackle had dried, I added black modelling paste through the Suit's stencil, which I love. I covered the front and back, but left the edges. I then added a wash of Cadmium Red Hue inside and out.  This gave a sheen on top of the black modelling paste, as well as seeping into some of the crackle, and leaving other spaces whiter.

I felt it was bright at this point, and I wanted a darker, more sinister look, for a sort of 'dark Alice in Wonderland' feel.  So I added Black Antiquing Cream and wiped back in places.  I gave a plaster heart the same treatment, red paint then antiquing cream.  I also dry brushed Interference Gold paint to give a sheen.

The whole binder was given a coat of Matte Varnish, to seal the Antiquing Cream and protect it.

I also made a plaque in the same way, with a Tando greyboard square I had, and a plaster skull.

Black Modelling Paste by Nikki

Morning everyone,

My turn to share a make with you today, and our theme was to use Black Modelling Paste.

I decided to do one of my favourite Tando pieces, a little heart shelf.  It lends itself to so many ways of decorating, and is very easy to put together, and very sturdy when glued, as it's made from mdf.

I assembled and painted the shelf with tinting base, and then a coat of Vermillion.

As I was on holiday, and had taken limited supplies, I had to improvise to get my top coat colour.  I wanted a crackle effect, but realised I'd forgotten the weathered wood, and chose to use chalk crackle instead.  I coated the orange with the crackle medium and left to dry.

For the top coat, I'd only taken one colour of chalk paint, so decided to mix some fluid acrylic into the colour I had, to make a turquoise.  I picked a bit of everything at this point!  Just be careful not to add more than 10-15% fluid acrylic, otherwise the crackle reaction may be affected. (This is not a problem if you were just mixing a paint colour).

When painting the top coat, do even strokes, and try not to go over a patch you've just done, as it crackles almost immediately, it's brilliant to watch!

The black modelling paste was then used through a stencil.  You can use black modelling paste exactly the same way as white or clear, and can paint over it if you wish.  But sometimes it's nice to use it as a feature, and it also makes certain colours pop when put over it, or acts as a contrast to metallic lustres etc.  It's a firm favourite of mine.

Once stencilled and dry, I added Copper Kettle Metallic Lustre on my finger, to the raised area's of the modelling paste, to highlight the skull and bring the colours together.  I also ran my finger around the edge of the shelf, to tie in.
